This Namji figure from northern Cameroon presents a striking, highly controlled composition defined by its deep black beadwork and sculptural clarity. Formed from a carved wooden core and wrapped in natural fibre, the surface is meticulously layered with fine black beads, creating a uniform and uninterrupted texture. The monochromatic treatment introduces visual weight and sophistication, allowing the silhouette and proportions to dominate over colour. A band of cowrie shells encircles the waist, introducing contrast and symbolic reference to femininity, value, and protection. Additional organic elements, including wooden beads and fibre ties, soften the composition and provide subtle variation within the otherwise disciplined surface. The facial features remain minimal and stylised, reinforcing the Namji tradition of prioritising form and material over expressive detail.
