  • Handcrafted Namji figure composed of carved wood, fibre wrapping, beadwork, and cowrie shell detailing.
  • This Namji beaded doll originates from northern Cameroon and reflects a longstanding tradition of symbolic female figures within Namji (Dowayo) culture. Carved from wood and wrapped in natural fibre, the figure is layered with dense multicoloured beadwork across the torso, creating a textured surface that contrasts with the restrained upper form. The addition of cowrie shells at the base introduces rhythm and reinforces associations with femininity, value, and protection. Facial features are intentionally minimal, shifting emphasis away from expression and towards material composition and symbolic presence. Historically, such figures were given to young girls and held cultural significance connected to fertility, identity, and social continuity. Today, they are recognised as collectible objects that retain their cultural reference while existing within contemporary decorative contexts.
